Should I buy a Headset or Handsfree Car Speaker System?

Headsets:  Headsets are light and portable and can be worn in or on the ear.  Headsets can be worn anywhere and allow you to speak in or out of the car.

Car Handsfree Speaker Systems:  If you need a wireless device for use in the car, but don’t want to wear a headset while you drive, the handsfree car speaker system is the solution.

Some car speaker systems show the phone number of person calling and some contain a phone book feature that may show the name of person calling.  This could prevent you from having to look at your phone to see who is calling.

Some speaker systems also can work as speakerphones outside of the car to take cell phone calls without holding the phone to your ear.

Some handsfree car speakers can be plugged into cars with cigarette lighters (or in-car electrical plugs) and always be charged in the car.

For Handsfree Car Speaker Systems Only:

Phone Book – Some systems have this feature which allow you to make or recognize a call using a list of numbers that are entered into the car handsfree speaker system by you manually or copied off of the phone list on your cell phone.

Some systems use bluetooth to copy phone numbers off your cell phone wirelessly and store them in the speaker system.  Other systems copy phone numbers from your phone’s SIM card.

Caller ID:

Screen – some units have a screen that shows the phone number or name of the person calling.

Speaker – these systems speak the phone number or name of person calling.

Phone number – shows and/or speaks the phone number of the person calling

Name – can be programmed to show and/or speak the name of the person calling

Headset Features

Basic Features:  Most headsets contain some basic features of answering calls, end calls, call volume adjustment by pressing one or more buttons on the headset.

Other common features are reject calls, mute calls, and redial last number called.

Noise Reduction:  Some headsets contain advanced features of noise reduction/cancellation technology that help reduce background noise while speaking.

Others contain wind reduction to reduce the amount of wind noise from interrupting conversation.

Descriptions of Terms for Headsets and Handsfree Car Speaker Systems:

Last Number Redial – Make a call to the last number that called you.

Recent Calls Received – Make a call from a list of the recent calls received.

Voice Dialing – These systems can be programmed to allow you to make a call by speaking the name of the person you want to call.

Generally, your cell phone must be able to do voice dialing on its own (without the bluetooth headset or car speaker) to enable your headset or speaker system to do voice dialing.

Talk Time – the amount of time the unit can be used to receive and/or make phone calls

Standby Time – the amount of time the unit can be on when not being used for phone calls

Headset Placement on/in ear

Headsets can be held on the ear by an earhook that curves around the ear or an earbuds that fit inside the ear.

Some headsets come with both earhooks and earbuds which allow users to choose which is most comfortable for them.

Pairing

Pairing is the process of connecting a headset or car speaker to a cell phone which allows you to use the headset or speaker to take phone calls.

Most systems have simple pairing processes.

Some headsets or systems can be paired with more than one cell phone.
